Leavenworth, Donald Huhn age 92, passed away peacefully at home on September 22, 2023, after playing piano serenades for his wife of 64 years. Don grew up in West Hartford, CT, the middle of three boys born to Dana and Marie Leavenworth. He attended the Hill School in West Hartford and graduated from Yale University in the Class of '52. Before beginning a 36-year career with Cargill, he served two years in the US Army as a Lieutenant stationed in Germany. In 1958 he met his wife, Joann, and was smitten after 15 dates and they married. His Cargill years took him to Iowa and Virginia before returning him to headquarters in Minneapolis. He was an untiring advocate for free markets, he worked diligently with community businesses and organizations, serving on several boards. For much of Don's career he focused on soy beans and oil seed processing, serving as Chair of both national and international associations. His career expanded to include leading 5 divisions, ultimately holding responsibility for an administrative review of worldwide operations. He was an avid enthusiast of the arts, dancing and music. Don loved to travel and took great joy planning trips and connecting with friends around the world. His happy place was a small inn on the north shore of Jamaica. His favorite past time was playing piano with particular focus on love songs, Cole Porter, Gershwin and patriotic songs. His love of piano was surpassed only by his love of family. In his later years he found great joy in the comradery of the Skylight Club. He was a values- based person who led by example. Don was preceded in death by his parents, Dana Turley Leavenworth and Marie Schmitz Leavenworth, his brothers Robert and Alden Leavenworth and his beloved daughter, Carolyn Leavenworth Meyers (Peter). He is survived by his wife, Joann; daughter, Amy Melin (Jeff) and son, Morse Leavenworth (Libby) as well as his loving grandchildren: Luke and Emily Melin, John and Sage Leavenworth. A private family service will be held in Connecticut followed by a Minnesota celebration of life at the Lafayette Club on Sunday, October 15, at 1:30 pm service with reception following.
